Traditional criminal profiling is improved by the use of Bayesian Networks. BNs provide a statistical model linking the criminal to the elements of the crime (crime scene, victim analysis, forensic evidence) and will be used to gain insight of individual crimes rather than serial offender. Using intelligent systems as well as a systematic approach to interpretting evidence moves criminal profiling into a field of inductive science rather than a good hollywood script. The criminal profiling research is a collaborative effort between organization in Italy, France, and the United States. Conducting the research at Duke University is Dr. Silvia Ferrari, Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering at Duke University, and her graduate student, Kelli Baumgartner.
